My Denver Beauty Staples

The products and techniques I use to overcome the Denver dryness.

Moving from Houston’s humidity to Denver’s dryness is something I was not ready for. My skin and hair were already dry in Texas, so I was (rightfully) scared of how they would react in Colorado. Over my first 6 months here, I’ve found some products and techniques to help acclimate my beauty routine, and I wanted to share them with you guys!

*Disclaimer: These are products and techniques that work for me and my skin / hair, and they may not work for everyone! I'm not a professional and do not claim to be, these are just beauty staples I know and love.

Find a sunscreen you love

When you’re 5,000 feet closer to the sun, it’s even more important to wear sunscreen! I incorporate two products with SPF into my everyday routine that have helped keep my skin protected.

First, I use the Jergens Natural Glow Self Tanner Face Moisturizer with SPF 20 every morning as half of my daily moisturizer duo. Not only does this moisturizer provide a protective barrier, but it also subtly warms up your skin tone over time. This helps counteract the pale-face effect that can happen when the rest of your body tans faster than your face due to sunscreen usage. Note: if you have highly sensitive skin, you may want to be careful with this one! My sister's skin had a negative reaction to this product, but I've never experienced one myself.

The second product (and my current holy grail) is the Supergoop Glowscreen, a daily primer with SPF 40 that provides hydration, a slight tint, and a beautifully dewy finish. If you want your skin to GLOW while protecting it from the sun, this is the daily sunscreen for you! Disclaimer - this product will probably work best for you if you’re very dry - it’s called “Glowscreen” for a reason, and the dewy finish might be overwhelming on oily skin.

Exfoliate more, not less

When I first moved here, I was trying to be as gentle with my skin as possible but was constantly plagued with pesky breakouts. After speaking to a dermatologist, though, I found out that exfoliation is key for dry skin!

Dry skin is just a layer of dead skin, and when it’s not regularly removed, it can get into your pores and cause breakouts. Obviously, don’t go too crazy with the exfoliation - your skin is still delicate, and you don’t want to push it too hard. I use a soft silicone face scrubber with the CeraVe Hydrating Cream-to-Foam Face Wash twice a day to gently remove any dry skin and cleanse underneath, and I’ve seen a significant decrease in breakouts since using the scrubber!

Customize your hair care

After leaving the humidity and my standard Target hair products at home, I honestly had no idea how to take care of my hair when I got to Colorado. I thought the dryness could help my natural wavy texture and knew I would need to keep up with consistent color treatments, so I wanted to treat my hair right. After many Instagram ads and Sophie Marie videos, I decided to give Prose a chance and couldn’t be happier with the result!

To ensure that your hair products meet your unique needs, you’ll take an intro quiz that gathers all the necessary information about your hair type, texture, goals, and environment. Then, Prose creates your custom formula and you can select which products you want to try. I use my Prose custom pre-shampoo mask, shampoo, and conditioner once a week when I wash my hair, and their curl cream pretty much every day to style my waves in the morning.

I have loved the way my natural texture looks in Denver - despite being dyed red, my hair has never looked healthier, shinier, or more defined, and I owe it all to Prose!

Carry chapstick with you. Always.

Does this one even need an explanation? Don’t leave the house without it here. You’ll regret it.
